One of my goals for the new year is to learn a new skill. I haven’t quite decided what that skill will wind up being, but I recently sat down to brainstorm. I am one who really enjoys learning. I like researching and listening and finding skills and topics I don’t know about and becoming at least novice. I like the idea of being a jack of all trades, but I found there are a lot of little things you can learn that will be useful in the future.
So whether or not you are wanting to gain a skill, need to improve in an area to gain in another, or simply are bored and looking for something new, I’ve come up with 21 things to potentially learn in 2017. You could learn:
- Basic sewing (think hems, buttons, simple patterns)
- To remove stains
- To tie a tie or bow tie
- To tie a pretty package bow
- To play a decent card game (go Go-Fish, War, or Solitaire)
- What various cosmetic ingredients mean and do
- To say no
- To say yes
- To navigate Photoshop
- To create video
- To compose a proper e-mail
- To apply false eyelashes
- Basic photography and editing skills
- To style photos
- A language
- The basics of SEO
- Basic coding
- How to make one or two fancy cocktails
- To make and perfect 5 really good meals
- How politics actually work
- To properly do laundry (those symbols on care tags actually mean something)
These are just a few things to potentially learn, but most are more than likely what I will choose to pick up this year. Some learning takes less time, like learning to tie a tie, and some, like learning language, may take all year. But ultimately, find something that interests you and learn to do it.

Thank you! I’ve just felt like I’m wasting my ability to learn since I’ve graduated college. I need something to keep me busy and improve.
