We’re halfway through the first month of 2019, and raise your hand if you’ve already broken at least one of your New Year’s Resolutions. *raises hand* New Year resolutions often fail because they’re require god-like efforts to put a dead stop in deep-seeded habits. While there isn’t an easy button for getting more sleep or actually going to the gym, breaking beauty habits is a much easier feat. Here are 4 beauty habits to break in 2019 and how to do it.
1 | Sleeping in your makeup
We’ve all been there one way or another — you’re too exhausted to remove your makeup. But push through. While you really should be removing your makeup and cleansing your skin thoroughly before bed, at the very least use a makeup removing towelette.
In my nightstand, I keep baby wipes or makeup removing wipes and a light moisturizer for nights I’m just too dang tired. I like the Korres makeup removing wipes. They’re full of softening milk proteins, soothing chamomile, and hydrating oils on top of removing all of your makeup.
2 | Forgoing SPF
I’ll never not be SPF’s #1 advocate. It’s so important to protect your skin from the sun, and with UVA and UVB exposure at an all-time high, SPF should be a staple in your morning routine.
Like brushing your teeth, once you get into the habit of applying a sunscreen, it’ll come without a second thought. Just another step in the routine, you know?
If you can’t get on board with a stand alone sunscreen, try a moisturizer or foundation with and SPF loaded formula (like this moisturizer from Lancome or this foundation from Bare Minerals).
3 | Not cleaning your makeup brushes
This is something I need to be more consistent with. Don’t get me wrong, I clean my makeup brushes, but I could stand to do it more often.
Have you noticed your makeup is going on muddy and generally icky? Your brushes probably need a good cleaning. Not washing your brushes can lead to bacteria build up, break outs, clogged pores, skin irritation, and infections–not to mention literal creepy, crawly infestations. Brrrt.

4 | Ignoring chipped nail polish
I am living for this realm of embracing your ‘imperfections’ (natural hair, bare skin, etc.), but I just don’t think your chipped manicure should make it onto this list.
Please tell me I’m not alone feeling an unease when my nail polish starts to chip.In my opinion, chipped polish can ruin an otherwise polished look. I’ve personally opted to wearing more flesh toned polish shades, so chipping goes a little unnoticed, or forgoing polish all together. But if you do love your brights, keep a polish removing pad on hand for an easy fix!
Here’s to a clean, refreshed, and beautiful new year!
