What a crazy time we’re living in, right? So many things have changed for the people of this country — and countries around the world. We’re advised to work from home, practice social distancing and self-isolation, and to wash our hands like crazy. (Anyone else need heavy duty hand cream?) Hopefully everyone can get on board with these preventative measures, and the outcome will be minimized. But while we’re stuck at home, we might as well do something with our time. So today we’re talking about how to make the most of social distancing and a few beauty & style things you can do while you’re home.
Last week I posted a piece about anxiety and social distancing, specifically the pressure it can have on us to be productive. And I totally feel that, the pressure to be productive. So take this list as more of a list of things to do in your free time…if you feel like it.

Declutter Your Makeup Collection or Closet
If you’ve stumbled across any posts on productive things to do while social distancing, you’ve been told to declutter. I mean, it’s a no brainer. It fills time and ultimately betters your space and rids you of clutter and chaos.
You could take this time to declutter your closet and beauty collection. I know I have already taken to this a bit, decluttering some of my expired lipsticks. Peeking at your closet and getting rid of items you no longer wear will not only get them out of your space, but create holes for you to see if there is anything you’re missing or want for the upcoming season.
Play with Makeup Products, Colors, or Techniques That Are Out of Your Comfort Zone
What better time to experiment than when no one is going to see you? Whether you play with bold colors or crazy techniques, staying home is an ideal time to venture out of your comfort zone and play with makeup.
Shop Your Closet & Create New Outfit Combinations
Something I have learned about myself during this quarantine is that one of my only hobbies is spending money. So if you’re like me and are, desperately, trying not online shop during this, try shopping your closet.
Pull out pieces you never wear and pair them with your most worn pieces or try to create new outfits with them. Take pieces you only wear one or two ways and try to style them up differently. Mix and match patterns and colors you typically don’t. Have fun!
Create a Vision/Mood Board
I love a good mood board. They help center all of your thoughts, inspiration, and creativity into one space. And there are so many mediums you can use to create them — Pinterest, platforms like Photoshop or Picmonkey for collages, physical moodboards on pin boards or paper.
And one of my favorite things about them is that physical mood boards can double as decor. That way your inspiration is always visible.
Watch a Beauty/Fashion Documentary That’s Been Intriguing You
Has there been a documentary or book you’ve been wanting to watch/read? Now is the perfect time. Some of my favorites:
Books:
- Face Paint* by Lisa Eldridge
- Back Chat Beauty* by Sophie Beresiner & Lisa Porter-Dixon
- Red Lipstick: An Ode to a Beauty Icon* by Rachel Felder
- Aesop: the book*
Documentaries:
- The Boy Who Made Shoes for Lizards
- Alexa Chung: The Future of Fashion
- Iris
- The True Cost
- Calendar Girl
Take That Bubble Bath You Never Have Time For
Sometimes when I’m bored, I take a nap or I take a bubble bath. Trust me, it feels super luxurious to take a bath midday. And since we have nowhere else to be, make a big deal out of it. Add some bubbles, oils, salts*. Grab a snack, cup of tea, glass of infused water. Do a mask. Finish it off with a mani/pedi. Make a whole spa day out of it!
Research Skincare Ingredients
This is something I really want to tackle in the coming weeks. Dive into your skincare and learn about ingredients. Like…what the hell is a sulfate? What purpose do they serve? Are they good for your skin? Do your products play well with each other?
Whether it’s productivity or relaxation, we all need something to do to pass the time. How do you plan to make the most out of social distancing?
