A few weeks ago, I was perusing Amazon (as you do), and I stumbled upon two new stick foundation products. The Infallible Shaping Stick from L’Oreal and the Super Stay Foundation Stick from Maybelline. At the time, I didn’t see either of these in stores or online, so I’m assuming they either hadn’t launched or weren’t available in the States yet, so I purchased both from Amazon. But they are both available in stores currently.
I have been a fan of L’Oreal’s Infallible complexion products in the past. The Infallible Pro-Matte and Pro-Glow foundations were both great, in my opinion, and I’ve bought multiple tubes of both. Aside from the brand itself, I’ve just been very into stick foundation recently. I spoke about the Hourglass Vanish Stick in last week’s beauty post, and have been using the Make Up For Ever HD foundation stick as part of a project pan for 2018. Long story short, I was excited to test out this product.
The Basics
When I saw this, it immediately reminded me of the Ultra HD stick from MUFE, which is one of my favorite foundation products. I love that the packaging is slender; it makes storing it easy.
There is an OK shade range with 11 shades. It doesn’t sound like a lot, but I do think there’s a nice variety to the shades. It doesn’t cater to only light skin tones, etc. You’re looking at about $12.99 (Ulta); it was a little less on Amazon and at Walmart. There’s .32 oz. of product as compared to .44 oz. in the MUFE stick foundation.
There’s also an SPF of 27, which is an oddly specific number, but I do appreciate the SPF in this product. Generally I don’t mind, because I’ll apply a sunscreen alone, but in the review you’ll see why I like the added boost here.
L’Oreal markets this foundation as a product you can mix and match to use for shaping–so use one shade to cover and conceal, a lighter shade to brighten, and a darker shade to contour. I am not going to use it that way, most likely, so I only have the shade Ivory (which is the lightest shade).
The Formula
This new L’Oreal Infallible Shaping Stick is described as having a lightweight, medium to full coverage that lasts 24-hours. Lightweight? Yes. Buildable, medium/full coverage? Yes. I kept this around a medium coverage, just because that’s what I prefer, but I agree you can build this up to a fuller coverage. 24-Hour wear? I’m not too sure about that; I don’t wear my makeup that long. The application is creamy and easily glides onto your skin and lasts for a solid 8-9 hours.
The Review
I’ve mixed and matched primers, moisturizers, and SPF and have definitely had some ups and downs with this product. With some sunscreens, I noticed a lot of pilling that wasn’t cute. There were certain moisturizers that weren’t quite moisturizing enough to make look nice. I’ve found the best way to apply this is over top of a creamy, rich moisturizer and no sunscreen…at least none that I have in my collection. I also prefer to initially apply this with a brush and then bounce it into the skin with a beauty sponge after.
It does play well with other concealers and complexion products.
At the end of the day, I will say it broke up around my nose and mouth a bit, and it looked like I’d been wearing it for hours. I, personally, didn’t mind that. With any foundation, I notice it breaking up around my nose and mouth area. The finish stayed pretty natural throughout the day, which I enjoyed.
The Bottom Line
I would recommend the Infallible Shaping Stick for someone who doesn’t want a fully matte, full coverage product. You’re going to get a very natural finish with this product. It’s not too dewy, so if you have oily skin, I don’t think you’ll hate this. And it’s not dry and mattifying, so if you have drier skin, you’ll appreciate it. Extremely oily girls…I would skip it.
After finally finding base products that played well beneath this, I think it’s a good drugstore foundation. It’s not my #1, but I’d buy it again if I needed to. If you are looking for something that will work the same with every skincare regimen you’ll ever use, I’m not sure this is it. But again, everyone’s skin reacts differently to product and layering products, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
The bottom line is I would recommend.
