Hi guys! I hop you guys are having a great start to your week.
A few weeks ago, as I was perusing Amazon, I stumbled upon a new stick foundation from both L’Oreal and Maybelline. Each piqued my intrigue, so I went ahead and purchased both so I could test and report back to you. Last week I reviewed the L’Oreal Infallible stick foundation, and today I’m, obviously, going to be reviewing its Maybelline counter part.
Tons of people rave about Maybelline’s SuperStay foundation, myself included, and for good reason. It’s a great full-coverage foundation at an amazing drugstore price. So I’m excited they brought a stick version of that product to the market.
The Basics
Let’s jump in with the facts. The Maybelline SuperStay stick foundation will run you $11.99 (at Ulta, though I got it for just under $10 on Amazon.) So it’s a dollar less than the L’Oreal Infallible stick foundation. However you will get less product; this stick foundation contains .25 oz. of product as opposed to the .32 oz. in the L’Oreal stick.
Maybelline’s shade range is better than L’Oreal’s with 16 shades. Like L’Oreal’s shades, some of these look quite similar in the tube, but actually are much darker and diverse than they seem.
The SuperStay stick foundation is also marketed to use as a multi-use stick that can be used to conceal, highlight, and contour. I did purchase multiple shades of this–one for foundation, and one for bronzing. Fair Porcelain and Natural Beige, respectively.
The Formula
Maybelline’s first all-in-one foundation stick claims to cover, highlight, and contour all while delivering a cream to powder finish that lasts 24-hours. I don’t know what it is about all of these foundations claiming to last 24-hours, but I have yet to test that claim. I find the formula to be lightweight while still being full coverage, which makes long time wear comfortable.
The Review
Coincidentally, I got my typical premenstrual breakout just before testing out this foundation, which actually was a good thing. Generally I don’t have a lot of blemishes to cover by a full-coverage foundation, so it was kind of good that I did for once.
In comparison to the L’Oreal stick foundation I reviewed last week, this was not nearly as fussy when it came to which products I wore underneath. Again, I used thick creams, thin creams, sunscreen, oils, etc. I did it all, and the application never faltered because of it.
I personally prefer to apply the Maybelline SuperStay stick foundation with a beauty sponge, because, as you know, I prefer a more light-medium coverage level. However, I did apply this with a brush a few times, and I liked it as well. I think depending on the coverage level you’re wanting, either application is acceptable.
I also found this lasted a long time, in extreme heat. Well…in like 90 degree heat, which is extreme in WV. Again it broke up slightly around my nose, as most complexion products do on me. But it actually broke up less than the L’Oreal stick. The other thing I wanted to note is it clung(?) to the dry spots around my breakouts just a bit. Not so much I found it problematic, but enough that I noticed.
The cream to powder formula is very interesting, but I found I really enjoyed the finish. It made the finish seem a little softer than a thick, full-coverage liquid would.
Using the SuperStay stick foundation as a bronzer was fine, but it’s not my favorite. It may have been because I think the color is too dark on me. But I prefer my Hourglass bronzer, as it’s a little more natural and subtle.
The Bottom Line
Like the L’Oreal Infallible stick, I’d recommend the Maybelline SuperStay stick foundation. It’s comfortable on the skin, lasts for a decent amount of time (not 24-hours), and will play well with most skin types. I didn’t find the finish to be extremely matte, which is good, it’s more of a natural matte.
I do NOT like the sponge applicator. I don’t find it works with a cream to powder formula. They could have done without it.
The bottom line is I would recommend the Maybelline SuperStay stick foundation.
