It’s another hot one in WV. I don’t know what it is, but there’s something about summer heat that makes me reach for a poppy hued lip color. Maybe it’s because red is related to increased blood pressure and heat in psychology terms. Regardless, I love me a good red lip in the summertime.
Today we’re talking about my go-tos for poppy lips in summer.
YSL Tatouage Couture Liquid Matte Lip Stain in ‘Grenat No Rules’
Not going to lie, I only bought this because Tati bought it and liked it. One thing I immediately loved about the YSL Tatouage Contour lip stain, before trying the product, was the applicator. It’s slant makes applying it easy and precise. And can we talk about the packaging? It’s gorgeous. I feel glamorous pulling this out of my makeup bag.
The formula is great, too. Ultimately it’s a stain. I say that because I tend to have some transfer with this product, which I don’t mind. As it does fade throughout the day, it leaves a beautiful color behind. It’s lightweight, matte, and high-pigmented. Dry time is also quick. I don’t ever feel like this is getting hard or crusty on my lips. It stays comfortable for length of wear.

Milani Color Statement Lipstick in ‘Orange-Gina’
I’m not going to spend a lot of time here, because I just spoke about this lipstick last week, as well as the next on this list. Milani has a lot of great lip colors in their Statement Lipstick line, but I fell in love with ‘Orange-Gina,’ which I’m afraid is being discontinued. As of now, I can only find it on Milani’s website.
It’s the most beautiful orange–it’s not too red or too yellow. The mixture is perfection in my opinion. I love pairing a bright orange with bronze eye shadows and glowy and bronzed skin.
Wet ‘n Wild Color Icon Gloss in ‘Love Bird Affair’
Like I said, I’m not going to linger here. ‘Love Bird Affair’ is a bright red gloss. The formula is almost jelly-like which makes it very comfortable on the lips. The only downside with this is that feathering tends to occur. It can usually be combated by using a lip liner prior to application.

Nars Lipstick in ‘Niagra’
One of my longtime favorite summer lip colors, ‘Niagra’ from Nars is described as a satin pink coral. What I love about the satin lipsticks from Nars is that they aren’t particularly opaque and dry. They add a pleasant wash of color to the lips that don’t overpower the rest of my face. ‘Niagra’ isn’t a shade I reach for when I want to make a statement, rather when I want my makeup to look finished.
Because it’s not a longwear lip product, I tend to have to reapply throughout the day. But as I’ve mentioned before, I don’t particularly dislike having to do that. It layers well, so reapplication is a breeze.

Julep It’s Whipped Lip Mousse in ‘Beso’
If you’re new, you may not know that this is one of my favorite liquid matte lipsticks on the market. The It’s Whipped mousse from Julep is a super-pigmented formula that provides saturated color for up to 12-hours, never feeling dry or uncomfortable. The color ‘Beso’ is great for summer because it’s a punchy and spicy matte orange. Unlike ‘Niagra,’ ‘Beso’ is a lip color I reach for when I want my lips to make the statement.
I love wearing this shade with bare eyes and a dewy, natural face.
