When it comes to fashion, I usually like to beat to the tune of my own drum. I generally know what I like, what flatters not only my body but my lifestyle as well. And my mindset is: if I like it, I’ll wear it. But I do like to follow the runways and designers to see what’s trending and going to be popular for a certain season.
I definitely get a lot of inspiration from the runway shows, but it also gives me a little road map for shopping at thrift stores and vintage shops. When you go to a mainstream store, current trends are laid out for you, but when you’re thrifting you usually have to have an idea of what you’re looking for a then search for it.
I can do a separate post on thrifting for trends, but today I want to talk simply about the trends for spring I’m currently obsessed with.
PASTELS
In the past, I’ve strayed very, very far away from pastels, but I’ve been LOVING what’s been happening. It’s all about the baby blues, baby pinks, creamsicle oranges, etc. I’m specifically on the hunt for pastel suits and shoes for this season. (I even picked up the most adorable pastel pink crossbody bag from Goodwill last week).
LAVENDER
You may have noticed I skipped lavender on my pastel list, because it is a trend of it’s own for spring. Kind of a cousin to Pantone’s Ultra-Violet color of the year, lavender was EVERYWHERE on the runways for spring. This is the epitome of spring for me. It’s such a bright but delicate color, and I can’t wait to see it out and about in spring. I’m eyeing a lavender suit from Banana Republic right now, taking a cue from Victoria Beckham. Talk me into it. (;
BOLD COLOR
While we’re covering the color trends for spring, let’s talk about the bold colors. Bold blue, bold red, bold purple. You can definitely use these to create a super cool and bright color blocked look, but I’ve liked looks like from Christopher Kane with an all yellow look or Stella McCartney with a bold red. I love the look of a monochromatic outfit. Personally I’ve been leaning toward the reds and purples moreso than oranges and yellows.
MIXED PRINTS
I love the look of mixed prints, so I was happy to see it on the runways for spring. My favorite combinations have been polka dots/floras, florals/Prince of Wales plaids, and florals/stripes.
SATIN
I love that silk/satin/satin-like fabrics are trending for spring. I personally like satin touches because I feel like it adds a sophistication and feminine sexiness to my outfit that I love. But it also adds texture and dimension to your look, especially if you’re going with a monochromatic situation. I always am looking for silk blouses at the thrift store, and I recently scored big with a lavender silk button down (amazing find!).
TRANSPARENCY
Clearly transparency is in. <– See what I did there? I went through a phase in high school where the transparent button down was my thing. I had maybe 7 different shirts in 7 different colors, with the matching camisoles to match. And I thought I was hot shit, but then I became disinterested. But I’m really happy this trend is back.
I most definitely will be embracing this trend, but updated. Instead of fully transparent tops (which are in style, no doubt), I like transparent accents on pieces. Details like exposed lace sleeves, a transparent mesh overlay on skirts and dresses are where it’s at for me. It can be so feminine or sexy and edgy depending on how you style it.
BERMUDAS
In the past, I’ve judged two fashion trends rather harshly: kitten heels and Bermuda shorts, both of which I’m loving at the moment. This one is going to be a little more challenging for some people to grasp than any of the previous trends mentioned. I recently watched Pretty Woman, and I seriously want a Bermuda short pant suit like Vivian has. I think the hardest part with this would be shoe selection. I’d advise if the short is above your knee, stick with flats. If it’s hitting or below the knee, go with a kitten heel or mid-height block heels.
