Hi friends! This post has been rattling around in my brain for months, and today is as good as any. I want to talk about makeup brands that have lost their luster for me, brands I’ve kind of lost interest in.
an introduction:
I’ve been doing a lot of reflection and reassessment over the past couple of years. And an intention I have for the year is to change my relationship with consumption – in particular, consumption regarding my beauty collection.
I love beautiful things. I love looking at beautiful things, having beautiful things to hold in my hands, and we can’t ignore the serotonin boost we get from buying something beautiful. And beautiful makeup products will compel me every time.
So I bought every beautiful collection these brands released. However, over the past couple of years, my intrigue in these few brands has faltered, kind of like the magic has fizzled. Let’s talk about it.
3 Makeup Brands That Lost Their Luster
no. 1 | Colourpop
I fondly remember the early days of Colourpop* – back when they only sold Super Shock Shadows* and Lippie Stix*.
They launched right when I started really getting into makeup and shortly before I started the blog. The brand was punchy, fun, innovative, and the products were really inexpensive yet high quality.
I’d still say the brand is fun and high quality, but boy have I gotten burnt out.
Why they’ve lost their luster:
There are a few reasons Colorpop lost my interest a bit.
- Because Colourpop utilizes in-house production, they have the capacity to produce new products on a whim. And they do.
I stopped paying attention to Colourpop a bit due to the sheer number of collections releasing.
I simply couldn’t keep up! My attention couldn’t keep up with the constant launches, let alone my wallet.
- And in the same vein, because of frequent product launches, a lot of the collections started to look the same to me.
One of the reasons I was attracted to Colourpop in the first place was the innovation and fun vibe I got from the brand. I felt they were bringing something exciting and different to the table.
But lately, I’ve just felt that everything looked so similar to other products in their own line as well as other brands. And the shiny factor dulled a little for me. - Another reason CP lost a bit of their fanfare for me is: I often can’t repurchase my favorites. Because of the high turnover of product, not a lot of products remain permanent, which is unfortunate when you’re running low.
no. 2 | Urban Decay
My first real dive into experimenting with makeup was with Urban Decay*. The brand was edgy and sexy and cool, and that is what teenage Jacqie wanted to embody. You know? (lol)
I vividly remember my love of the Lip Envy lip stains, Primer Potion*, and the beloved Naked palette (RIP).
The launches were grungy and unique. There weren’t a ton of other brands doing what UD was doing at the time.
Why they’ve lost their luster:
- UD went vanilla. That edgy and sexy, unexpected direction the brand was going pivoted. It started to capitalize and rely, a little too much in my opinion, on the success of the first Naked palette*. And now it looks like everything else.
When brands all start to look the same, their launches stop adding a ton of value to an overall collection. Urban Decay still releases beautiful products in formulas that are well-performing. But my need for them lessens. Instead, it almost inspires me to reach for things I already have and use them in a new way. - UD was one of the first high end makeup brands I really got into when I started wearing makeup. And at the time, the formulas were unmatched for me.
While I still think the UD formulas are good and user friendly, I’ve preferred formulas from other brands now, for one reason or another.
no. 3 | Anastasia Beverly Hills
You couldn’t meet a makeup girlie in 2016 that didn’t love or lust after the ABH Modern Renaissance* palette. The chokehold that warm rust and orange palette had on me … I actually just decluttered it.
However, ABH had all sorts of high profile launches prior to that and was a brand I really loved.
Why they’ve lost their luster:
- A few years ago, Norvina, or Anastasia’s daughter, took over the creative direction of the brand. But when that happened, they started releasing products at a rapid pace. And we know how I feel about that. I just couldn’t keep up. It was ABH overload, and things started to get a bit repetitive.
- I’ve got quite a few ABH palettes rattling around in my collection, and I love them. But realistically, I’m not reaching for them day to day. So I’m trying to be more realistic about what I’m using so I can shop a lot smarter.
Are there any brands you used to love but have lost their luster a bit?
