If there’s any season that makes me want to be the snuggliest version of myself, it’s winter. While I personally have a strong disdain for trying to function in snow, there truly is something magical about the winter, something that makes me want to indulge in myself. The long, chilly nights paired with chaotic Christmas prep, festive plans, and constant holiday shopping is enough to make me want to hibernate until February. I love the cozy nature of winter so much, I wanted to introduce you to some of the small, easy lifestyle changes I plan on making for a cozier, happier winter.
Create a cozy, relaxing space.
Recently, I’ve been fully invested in making everything as hygge as possible. I could go on and on about this, but maybe I’ll save that for another post. The whole concept makes me feel cozy and content, but something we can all adopt is creating a soft, cozy space.
Forgo your harsh overhead lights for warm lamps and flickering candles. Adorn your seating spaces with luscious velvet and wool textures (any excuse to buy some new throw blankets and a pillow or two). Don’t forget the plush robe for ultimate snuggle vibes. Stock up on your favorite treats. For me, it’s mandarin oranges and candied pecans.
Setting the vibe to be ambient and cozy ensures you slip into that world as soon as you walk through your door. I’ve noticed a tremendous difference in my mood by being more mindful about my space.
Invest more time in my evening routine.
I don’t mean which skincare products you’re using. I am focused on my evening routine in its entirety here. Because I’m not working outside of the home this winter, it’s hard to draw a line between my work day and my evening outside of work.
After the cooking and cleaning is done in the evenings, I want to start powering down in a relaxing way. Filling my essential oil diffuser with lavender and sweet orange sets the mood for sleep and relaxation. Taking a bath with softening oils in soft scents tells my body it’s almost time for sleep. I also want to start swapping my phone for a hard copy book around 9 pm. Lighting a wintry candle and snuggling up with a good book is the my perfect end to a day.
Spend less time online.
Since Apple’s ‘Screen Time’ feature was launched, I have been trying to seriously step back from screen time. I know I’m not alone in this, but I spend a lot of time online. And I’m falling into the trap of being jealous of what I see from friends and strangers. It’s not good for my mental health or my productivity.
Instead of spending countless hours scrolling, I’m trying to opt for brisk walks or coffee dates or simply unplugging for a bit.
Socialize meaningfully.
In the spirit of unplugging and being more present, I want to make a point to socialize more. But I don’t particularly enjoy large, loud gatherings. I consider myself an extroverted introvert. I don’t like to be alone and love being with others, but in small groups.
The cold winter weather mixed with evenings that come early make for the perfect setting for meaningful social events. Invite a friend over for dinner and a movie. Put your phones away and really catch up. Nothing grinds my gears quite like trying to have a conversation with someone who hasn’t taken their eyes off their screen.
Enjoy the season’s festivities.
After the holidays have passed, I hear everyone groaning in guilt about the season passing us by so swiftly. Take a moment to really enjoy the festivities happening around you.
Make gift wrapping indulgent by spending the whole day in full festive mode. Make cookies (and fill your house with that amazing cookie smell) while you’re wrapping gifts. Don’t forget to put your favorite holiday movie (The Holiday or The Santa Clause) or Christmas music on! Check out your neighborhood’s holiday decorations or attend local, festive events. Take advantage of the things around you instead of making them a chore or a tick off your to do list. Changing your mindset will make holiday chores more enjoyable.
I’d love to hear your tips for a cozy and happy winter.
