I asked, and you answered. And the verdict is … watermelon!
There’s all kinds of makeup challenges floating around the Internet–from followers choose my makeup to Google picks my makeup to my magazine pages choose it. I thought it’d be fun to create a makeup look inspired by some of our favorite summertime staples. In a very efficient and official Instagram/Twitter poll, I asked you guys which summer staple was going to inspire a beauty post. The options were:
- Watermelon – who doesn’t think of watermelon when asked about summer?
- Lemonade – again, it’s just a given
- My Neutrogena SPF bottle – it’s my signature scent (;
- A flamingo pool float – definitely Insta worthy
The verdict? Watermelon!
I could have easily gone all out and created a little watermelon eye shadow look with complementing lips, but I didn’t want to do that. I wanted to create a look that I’d actually wear in real life, taking my inspiration from a watermelon.
So let’s do this.
Face
I wanted to keep my skin fresh and hydrated, like a watermelon.
- After SPF, I applied the Radiance primer from Laura Mercier. It gives a lit from within type of glow while it primes your face for makeup.
- Using a beauty sponge, I applied a mixture of Fiona Stiles Matte Finish Concentrate and a little bit of the Reveal Luminating Drops from Algenist. This foundation is great, because it offers a really natural, soft matte finish and is comfortable throughout the day. Then I applied concealer where I needed it.
- For blush, I wanted something pink but not too peach or coral. I opted for a liquid blush from Nars in Orgasm. I apply a few dots to my cheeks and blend out using my beauty sponge. This method diffuses the color beautifully.
- Then I powdered and added a little bit of a champagne colored highlight to the tops of the cheekbones, Cupid’s bow, bridge of the nose–everywhere your skin is naturally highlighted.
Eyes
The eyes are definitely the highlight of this summer staple inspired makeup look. As I said, I could have went in heavy with reds and greens, but I wanted to be realistic. I wanted to create an eye look I’d actually wear and that compliments my skin tone and makeup style
Having said that, I typically don’t do eye looks with harsh lines and cut creases. So like my usual looks, this will also be soft and blended. I used the Royal Peach palette from Kylie Cosmetics. I wanted to give this palette one more shot before I de-clutter it. I’ve included swatches of the shades for reference so you can match the colors to what’s in your collection.
- To begin, I used a combination of Sandy and Sorbet to lay down as a transition shade. Then I warmed up the crease with Peachy.
- In the outer corner, I applied Crush, being careful not to get that shade too high into the crease. I also added that Crush shade to the inner corner of my eye. We’re going to do a low-key halo eye.
- Taking that shade Duke, I added that to the outermost corner of the eye, blending softly into the crease. I didn’t want it to be too dark, but I wanted to be able to see some of that pinky-red.
- The showstopper here is the center of the lid. After spraying my shadow brush with Mac Fix+, I applied Mojito, which is greenish gold, chartreuse color, to the center of the lid. And then added a teeny tiny amount of that crush shade to a blending brush and blended the Mojito shade into the inner and outer corners.
- I essentially did the same thing beneath my lower lash line. Take Duke on the outermost corner, Crush on the innermost section, and Mojito in the center.
A regular watermelon is pink/red encased in a green rind, so this look is kind of the opposite.
To finish everything off, I added a bright champagne shade to the inner corner of the eye and under the brow bone. Added some mascara, and that was it.
Lips
I envisioned the lips for this look being juicy and plump.
- Colourpop’s ‘Faded’ lip liner made a perfect base. I filled in my lips entirely with this.
- I finished off with YSL’s Tint-in-Oil in Watermelon Red. This oil leaves your lips looking so plump and so juicy. I love it. Not to mention the beautiful pink stain it leaves on your lips once it wear off.
I hope you enjoyed this summer staple inspired makeup look! I actually really liked how it turned out!
