+ 4 I want to try
I’m going to tell you something embarrassing. Well, it’s only so embarrassing because I was like 12, literally. When I first was getting into makeup and didn’t understand how the industry operated, I thought makeup brands marketed to Black women just weren’t for me — like the products wouldn’t work for me or I wasn’t allowed to use them. Thank goodness I’m not stupid anymore, because the black owned beauty brands I’m talking about today are some of my favorites (and some I want to try.)
[ 4 Black Owned Beauty Brands I Love ]
I’m going to preface this by saying I know these are all mainstream brands. I don’t need comments about it. I’m the worst when it comes to trying indie brands. I like being able to just throw a bunch of stuff into one cart when I’m shopping, which usually means Sephora or Ulta. And by the time makeup gets to those stores, they’re more mainstream. But I do love these brands.
1 | Pat McGrath Labs*
If you want some sumptuous, opulent, expensive ass makeup, Pat Mcgrath is your girl. “The Mother,” Pat, veteran to the beauty industry knows her stuff. Not only is she a self-made billionaire, she also does something like 60 shows at each Fashion Week. She also has some of the most stunning makeup packaging ever created.
PML is one of the brands I’m most inspired by. From the packaging to the color stories to her promo videos on Insta, I just love it all.
I’ve yet to bite the bullet and buy one of her palettes, but I have swatched them, and I’m in love with the shimmer and glitter formulas. I definitely want to try more from the brand, but she’s expensive.
Some of my favorite Pat McGrath Labs products: Sublime Perfection Foundation*, Permagel Ultra Lip Liners*, Fetish Eyes Mascara*
2| Juvia’s Place*
Juvia’s Place, in my opinion, was probably one of the most popular Black owned makeup brands until Fenty came on the scene. What I love about the brand is their celebration of color — it’s pigmented and intense and vibrant. Their website says the brand was created inspired by Africa and the rulers and queens of African kingdoms.
My mind automatically goes to the eyeshadows Juvia’s Place offers, and those are the products I am most familiar with from the brand. I find the color stories to be really interesting and inspiring, and they almost always contain color combinations I wouldn’t have thought to put together, but seeing them in the pan makes me want to create fun eye looks.
And the quality is there as well. They’re some of my favorite eye shadows in my collection.
Some of my favorite Juvia’s Place products: the Masquerade palette*, the Nubian palette*
3 | Fenty Beauty*
While Fenty isn’t solely owned by Rihanna, hers is definitely the face of the board. Fenty Beauty made a ripple in the beauty industry when it released their initial foundation product in a whopping 50 shades encompassing the lightest of the light and darkest of the dark, both facets of the beauty industry that pretty much were ignored until then. Since then, though, they have expanded their range to a full collection.
Some of my favorite Fenty products: Gloss Bomb*, the lip/cheek mini sets* are such a good value and give you a change to try multiple products in mini sizes.
4 | Briogeo*
So… Briogeo isn’t a makeup brand, but a beauty brand nonetheless. They’re big thing is taking haircare back to the basics with simple, naturally derived, good for your hair products.
Some of my favorites: Be Gentle Be Kind Shampoo + Conditioner*, Stimulating Therapy Massager*
Some products on my wishlist: Blossom + Bloom Shampoo* + Conditioner*, Avocado & Kiwi Mega Moisture Superfood Mask*
[ 4 Black Owned Beauty Brands I Want to Try ]
1 |Beauty Bakerie*
I first heard about Beauty Bakerie on Instagram. Founded in 2011 by Cashmere Nicole, and her story is kind of amazing, and the kind I love to hear. She had a daughter much younger and dealt with being a young mother, and later battled with breast cancer. And even so, she felt she could do something to make people’s lives “sweeter, not bitter.” And so Beauty Bakerie was born. The packaging is the cutest — like flour bags and beauty sponges in an egg crate.
Not only is the branding stinkin’ adorable, they also have a Sugar Initiative where the fund orphanages, so a percentage of every purchase is going toward that mission, which I also love.
Some of the things I want to try most: Eyelash Icing mascara* (the wand looks like something I’d get on with), InstaBake Aqua Glass Foundation*, Cake Pop Lipstick Minis*
2 | Uoma Beauty*
I have heard a ton about Uoma Beauty, but haven’t actually made a purchse ytet! It was created by Sharon Chuter, who was born in Nigeria, for the “people who have been left.” She describes the brand as something for everyone, because what makes humans beautiful are the differences.
Some products I want to try: Allure Black Magic Color Palette*, Black Magic Carnival Lipstick*
3 | Mented
One reason I’m so excited to try out this brand is because I really like the creators, KJ Miller and Amanda Johnson. If you watch videos of them together, they just seem so sweet and fun. I also love that “Mented” is shorthand for pigmented. The brand was created because these women felt there was a “nude” lipstick for Black women. They phrased it that not everyone has pink lips, which I think a lot of people forget. And their line has now expanded to other categories like nail polish and eye shadows. They also recently made headlines for raising $3 million in funding, which is amazing.
Some things I want to try: the lip glosses (specifically in #1 Cran, Coralition, and Baby Brown), Pretty in Pink Semi-Matte Lipstick
4 | JD Glow
Created by best friend duo Jennifer and Deandra in Baton Rouge, LA, JD Glow is that brand with all the mesmerizing glitters you see all over Youtube. Ugh, I die.
Their brand is focused on offering high quality (amazing metallic/foil products) at an affordable price. And, their formulas are made in the USA.
I want to try any of the shadows.
