I’ve come to anticipate which monochromatic color story Colourpop is going to use in their next palette. In the past, I’ve reviewed the purple It’s My Pleasure palette and the green, Just My Luck. Today we’re talking all about their newest 9-pan, Blue Moon! Keep reading for my Colourpop Blue Moon palette review — including swatches and two easy and wearable eye looks using colors from this palette!
the basics
Blue Moon is another color story in the monochromatic collection from Colourpop. Like it’s sibling palettes, it’s a 9-pan pressed powder shadow palette and retails for $12. It’s also labeled cruelty free.
The packaging is the same sleek plastic with a huge mirror we’ve seen in the other palettes in this monochromatic collection, but Blue Moon’s packaging is a beautiful sky blue.
the shade selection
A lot of brands have been popping blues into their palettes lately, but I wasn’t taken away until I saw promo photos for Blue Moon.
The Blue Moon palette consists of 5 matte shadows and 4 metallics.
What I particularly enjoy about this blue palette is that there is a variety of tones. Some of Colourpop monochromatic palettes contain a lot of beautiful colors, but the shades lack tonal differences. This causes some of the shadows to look pretty similar once on the eye, especially when blended into each other. It also makes creating a full look with depth.
The Blue Moon palette consists of light blue shades, mid tone blues, as well as deep blues like Clued In.
From left to right:
- Lumi: metallic iridescent icy blue
- Da Ba Dee: matte lapis blue
- Moonlite: matte baby blue
- Starry Eyed: matte sky blue
- Billie Jean: metallic periwinkle
- Tide Pool: metallic cerulean
- Mad About U: metallic sapphire
- Fine China: matte vibrant cobalt blut
- Clued In: matte navy
the review
It’s usually safe to say I enjoy my Colourpop palettes, and the Blue Moon palette is no different. I do have a few complaints, the same I had with Just My Luck, really.
But first: my standout shades are: Lumi, Moonlite, and Tide Pool.
the good:
Colourpop knows how to do metallics; Lumi, Billie Jean, Tide Pool, and Mad About U are so beautiful. And they last!
I also love the shade variety in this palette. There are deep, dark tones, mid tones that are good for transitioning, and light tones. None of the shades look similar on the eye, and I love that it a smaller palette.
the ehhh:
I don’t have any major fails about this palette, but I do have a familiar complaint. Some of the shades are a little difficult to blend. Da Ba Dee, for instance, had me struggling to get a blended and diffused effect in the crease. I noticed these blues need to be applied a bit differently than, say, a brown. Instead of going in initially with a fluffy blending brush and applying it in the classic windshield wiper motion, it’s much easier to work with if you almost stamp the color on and then blend the edges gently.
Once I got the hang of it, it worked a lot better. But I still struggled a little bit with the darker mattes.
the looks
#1 — Dramatic and (Mostly) Matte
When coming up with looks using the palettes I review, I try to use as many shades as I can. For this look, I started will the mattes (and topped it off with a shimmer sometime during the day.)
- I first laid down that matte baby blue, Moonlite, as my transition shade, blending it into the crease and brushed across the lid.
- Da Ba Dee is visually one of my favorite shades in the palette. I used this matte lapis blue in the crease. What I wanted was a really intense, precise purple-ish blue crease, which didn’t happen. But I blended this shade into the crease.
- After blending the crease, I applied an opaque layer of Moonlite all over my lid.
- To add depth and dimension to the outer corner I first used Fine China, the matte cobalt blue in the outer corner of the lid. Then I deepened it a little further with Clued In.
- To finish off the upper lid, initially, I applied a wing with the BFF Liquid Liner in CRZY, the sapphire blue.
Essentially I did the same thing on the bottom lashline:
- With a soft pencil brush I applied Moonlite along the entirety of the lower lash line.
- Then I deepened the outermost portion with the darker mattes, Fine China and Clued In.
To finish off everything,
- I tightlined with a navy liner (I can’t remember what it was) and lined the waterline with the NYX Faux Whites Eye Brightener in Baby Powder,
- Applied Lumi to the inner corner,
- Once I was finished, I added a little bit of Lumi to the lid.
#2 — Wearable and Subtle Blue
I’ve always loved the ways blues and browns look together — in fashion, interiors, and eye shadow!
This look is quite simple but I think it’s really pretty:
- Begin on the upper lids by blending a mid-toned brown into the crease. I used Tamarind from the Natasha Denona Safari palette.
- Next I used Thorn (ND Safari) to deepen the outer corner a bit.
- To finish up the lids, I used Shea (ND Safari) as a liner to serve as a “liner” along the lash line and used a bit of Colourpop’s Supernova Shadow in Juvenile on the inner most part of the lid for a little sparkle.
- With a pencil brush, I smudged Mad About U along the lower lashline and blended a small amount of Tamarind into it, to add warmth and give the lower lash line a diffused effect.
- I finished the look by applying Lumi to the inner corners, taking it along the inner part of the lower lash line and into the crease near the inner corner on the upper lid.
the bottom line
I’m sure no one is surprised, but I’d recommend the Colourpop Blue Moon palette. If you like blues. If you don’t, obviously, you’d absolutely hate it.
What do you guys think about Colourpop’s Blue Moon palette?
