I know, another ColourPop review. I love ColourPop. You love Colourpop. Yesterday I posted a review of the BFF Mascara and was a little bummed, to be honest. But I promise today’s review has a much happier ending. Today we’re reviewing the new Colourpop It’s My Pleasure eye shadow palette from Colourpop–including swatches and a couple of different looks.
the basics
It’s My Pleasure is a 9-pan pressed powder shadow palette and retails for $12. Each pan is .04 oz, and the palette is cruelty free.
The color story is made up of pinks, purples, and silvers, and contains a mix of metallic and matte shades.
the packaging
The packaging on this palette is a heavy duty plastic in a vibrant violet color. It has a snap closure and includes a large, crisp mirror. The shade names are printed on the back of the palette as well as under each shade.
It’s pretty compact, which I love because it’s easy to store and travel with.
the shade selection
Since ABH came out with the Norvina palette that left me a little underwhelmed (I mean I love it, but I want purple), I was stoked when ColourPop revealed they were releasing a purple palette!
The It’s My Pleasure palette contains a mix 3 true mattes, 1 matter w/ glitter, 3 duochrome shimmers, and 2 metallic shimmers.
From left to right:
- Kittenfish: matte cool lavender
- Do or Dough: metallic bright lavender w/ blue duo chrome
- Pretty Cruel: matte berry mauve w/ gold flecks
- Bare Minimum: metallic violet berry
- Earthshine: metallic pinky lavender w/ blue duochrome
- Chick Lit: metallic deep amethyst
- Mr. Sandman: icy rose w/ silver sheen
- Fan Fiction: matte dusty pink
- Sleeper: matte eggplant
the review
the good:
I’m not surprised I like this. I tend to like most of ColourPop’s shadows. The standouts for me are Pretty Cruel, Earthshine, Kittenfish, and Chick Lit.
I was impressed that even the metallics went on with a dry brush and still packed a punch. The only shade I had any issue with was Bare Minimum; it definitely applies better with a finger. When you blend it out with a fluffy brush, it looses the glitter but still leaves behind punchy color.
There’s a versatile mix of shades, and I think you can create a lot of different looks with this palette. There are a couple of muted shades and then some brilliant, vivid shades. You can mix and match and create different vibes in your eye look.
the ehhh:
Overall I’ve enjoyed the It’s My Pleasure palette. However there a few annoyances. As excited by the purple color palette as I was, once the shades were on the eye, I found it actually lacked the purple I was looking for. There were a handful of good purples, but a lot of the shades pull pink–more red–on the eyes. I guess I just want cool toned, dusty purples. But even so, the colors are really pretty.
The next thing that’s kind of a downside is that these shadows are extremely creamy and dense. And that might sound like a good thing. But the weird thing about them is that they feel like they’re going to be easy to work with when you swatch them, but once you try to layer them on top of each other, it’s a little hard to work with. The first time I used this, I used way too much product, and things got a little out of control. Overall, if you use a light hand, you won’t have an issue.
The final thing about this that I didn’t love was that four of the shades–Pretty Cruel, Sleeper, Mr. Sandman, and Earthshine–were repeats, recently launched in ColourPop’s new single shadow collection. This could be annoying if you had purchased them as singles. But I didn’t have any of them individually. So that’s not really a con for me, but it could be for someone else and was worth noting.
the looks
Since I’ve been playing with this for about a week now, I’ve realized you can create multiple different looks with this palette! Below are details of how I created three.
#1
I wanted to do something that was dramatic but not extremely difficult. So for this looks I:
- Applied Sleeper along the upper lash line to create a wing.
- Applied Earthshine all over the lid with finger.
- Lined the top and bottom waterline with Best-O liner from ColourPop.
- Smudged Sleeper beneath the lower lash line with a small pencil brush.
#2
When I first opened this palette, I was immediately drawn to the glitters and metallics. They are gorgeous, after all. However, I wanted to showcase that you can create a complete matte look using this palette as well, since there are 3 matte shades.
- I started by mixing Kittenfish and Fan Fiction and applying that to my crease with a super fluffy blending brush. I wanted to diffuse this to make it look soft, not harsh.
- Next, apply Sleeper with a slightly smaller blending brush to the outermost portion of the eye, blending into the crease (but not above it).
- To top of the eye, I patted some of my powder onto the center of my lids, to add contrast from the pinks, to my brow bone, as well as in my inner corners.
- Finally, I smudged a bit of Sleeper along the outer, bottom lash line and Fan Fiction along the rest, blending the two colors together.
#3
The last look is the most glamorous, in my opinion! I wanted to really get in there and play with Chick Lit and make the purple stand out.
- Begin by diffusing a mixture of Fan Fiction and Kittenfish into the crease, dragging it outward to create almost a V shape.
- With a small tapered pencil brush, apply Chick Lit to the outer corner and along the crease. Once the shape is created, blend with a clean blending brush. Continue this step until you achieve the desired color/density.
- Spritz brush with Mac Fix+* (or something similar), and dip into Do or Dough. Pat this onto the main part of your lid.
- Drag Chick Lit along the bottom lash line with a small pencil brush. Apply Fan Fiction just beneath Chick Lit, blending the two colors together.
the bottom line
My bottom line with ColourPop palettes is pretty standard across the board. The Colourpop It’s My Pleasure palette is beautiful and is definitely worth the $12. If the color palette intrigues you and you will wear purples, I think you’ll love this. If you don’t like purple eye shadow, then this isn’t the palette for you.
