New palette? Uh Huh Honey! Hi friends; I hope you had a lovely weekend. I spent the past few days packing up my last solo apartment to move all (so much) of my stuff to the new house! I still have a lot to go, but I’m making good progress. Though I was busy, I was able to play around with the new Uh Huh Honey eye shadow palette from Colourpop and thought I’d offer my thoughts. I’m going to keep this a bit brief, because I’m finding my CP reviews to be a bit repetitive. Nonetheless, keep scrolling for my Colourpop Uh Huh Honey palette review.
the basics:
The newest addition to Colourpop’s monochromatic palette family is the Uh Huh Honey palette which features 9 sunshiney yellow shades. Like the other palettes in this collection, it’s a 9-pan eye shadow palette, but Uh Huh Honey features a mixture of pressed shadow and pressed glitter formulas. It retails for $12 and is labeled cruelty free and vegan.
the shade selection:
I know it’s not original, but I’ve really been wanting to add a pop of yellow into my makeup collection recently. A lot of warm, sunset types of palettes have a small pop in there, but I wanted to few bright tones as well as a few mustardy yellow tones. Enter the Uh Huh Honey palette! One thing I love about CP is how much they listen to their customers (now if only we could get them to release just a little slower!).
Uh Huh Honey consists of 5 buttery mattes, 3 metallic, and 1 pressed glitter.
While there’s a variety of tones in this new palette, I feel like we’re missing one really deep, almost brown yellow shade to add dimension to eye looks. However, I don’t particularly mind reaching into another palette to create a look.
I actually don’t mind when the majority of a palette is matte. However, my problem with this palette is that the 5 mattes are very similar in tone. There isn’t a light to highlight, a mid tone to contour with, and a deep tone to add depth. They’re just all kind of the same. So I find it difficult to create a full look using this palette.
from left to right:
- Stinger – matte buttery yellow
- Sunburst – metallic lemon yellow w/ blue glitter
- Sweet Spot – matte primary yellow
- Dandy – metallic vibrant yellow gold
- Palooza – bright yellow with a copper duochrome shift
- Queen B – metallic dandelion
- Totally Buggin’ – matte butterscotch yellow
- Oh Beehave – matte mustard
- Buzz Kill – matte yellow brown
the review:
My thoughts about Colourpop shadows tend to be pretty consistent. I like the formula, especially for the price.
My stand out shades in the Uh Huh Honey palette are: Oh Beehave, Totally Buggin’, and Sunburst.
the good
The good, and the obvious, starts with their metallics. Colourpop just does metallic shades so perfectly. Sunburst, Dandy, and Queen B are so smooth and soft, and they apply to the lid so intensely pigmented that it’s hard to complain.
I also love that there is some depth to the yellows in this palette. I think it could have been easy for CP to go in a very primary, rainbow direction with their yellows. And while that would have been nice for the colorful shadow lovers out there, I think this combines true yellows with wearable brown-toned yellows that are a little easier to wear.
the ehhh
I share the same major complaint as many people–Palooza. This shade is incredibly beautiful. I swatched it and couldn’t stop staring. It’s gorgeous. Unfortunately it’s a pressed glitter and isn’t eye safe. A lot of palettes include shades that aren’t labeled eye safe, but it’s because of the ingredients they use for the color. Sometimes they can stain the lids. However, Palooza is a pressed glitter, and the glitter can irritate the eye or even cause micro tears.
My eyes are sensitive, so I won’t put this on my eyes out of fear of irritation. And that’s really unfortunate because it’s such a unique and pretty product. I wish they’d have made this into a super shock shadow formula instead.
the bottom line:
EDIT: If you don’t have any yellows in your collection and have been looking to add some, I think you’ll get on with this palette. However, if you’re in the market for a complete color collection, I think this misses the mark a little bit.
I think you know what I’m going to say — I definitely recommend this is you like yellows, don’t mind reaching into another palette for a darker brown, and will use it.
