I know it’s technically still summer, and even the 85 degree weather is screaming summer. But the moment September 1st comes around, I’m in full fall mode. My house is decorated with pumpkin, the Leaves candles get lit, and the cozy sweaters come out. Fall is my favorite time of year. Nothing beats talking a walk in crisp, cool, autumn air. The leaves are changing; the colors are beautiful and rich. And, let’s be honest, the fall candle collections are divine. But real talk, fall fashion is the best fashion.
My fall fashion vibes are usually pretty constant. You know the staple pieces we all gravitate toward — oversize sweaters, knee high boots, fabulous coats. But this year, I’ve noticed my preferences have changed a little. My general style is morphing as I get a little older.
In recent years, I’ve definitely developed a taste for looking a bit more professional than casual. I’m far from alone, but it is a bit out of the ordinary in WV. Culottes have been in the corner of my eye lately. My 7th grade self would be ecstatic (she loved culottes). And they’re perfect for fall weather–when it’s not too hot, but not too cold.
Plaid, houndstooth, and herringbone patterns are always a must for me during the fall. I especially love the prints in blazers. And I love wearing blazers in a dressed down kind of way, something I’ll definitely be rocking this season. I’ve got a feeling my go-to outfit will be an oversize blazer, turtleneck sweater, jeans, and loafers. Casual but a little more on the professional side.
For the most part, I’d call my style conservative and classic, but from time to time I like to add a little edge. For fall this year, I think I’ll do that via leather. Of course my leather jackets are at the ready when the temperature drops, but I want to introduce a leather skirt. I actually just got rid of a leather skirt, but it was more of a skater style, which isn’t quite as sophisticated as I would like. Instead, I’m on the hunt for something straighter and more mature looking.
What I love about a good leather skirt is how it can be dressed down or dressed up. I can pair it with a button down and sweater for work and then throw on an oversize sweater to make it ultra casual. I also love the juxtaposition of a harsh, edgy leather mixed with a soft, feminine sweater. It combines my fashion styles into one chic look.
A little off topic, but I swear it’s relevant. I’m a huge Friends fan, and the more I watch it the more obsessed with Monica, Rachel, and Phoebe’s fashion. In The One With Rachel’s Other Sister, Monica’s outfit on Thanksgiving Day had me hooked. She wore a calf-length dress that was flowy with knee high, heeled boots. I really can’t get enough.
So. That is something you’ll see me in this year. I just love how streamlined it looks to the eye. And again, it mixes the leather with a very delicate fabric.
