If you know me at all, you know I love a good red lip. For a hot minute (years) during college, red was typically all I wore. It made me feel like I had my shit together, you know? But during the holidays, everyone wears a festive red lip. Everyone. If that’s what it takes to get you in the spirit, then keep on keeping on. But maybe you’re wanting something a little different and more distinct than every other lipstick wearer this season. Keep reading for my unconventional holiday lip picks.
Gold
Unexpected lip colors have been gaining popularity over the past few seasons. And while I can’t quite get on board with the blues and mints (though I wish I could pull them off), I’m quite attracted to them. For holiday, nothing that comes to mind is more glamorous or appropriate than a sparkly gold lip! Deck the halls, right?
Personally, I gravitate toward a liquid, glossy, metallic gold or a lip topper situation as opposed to an opaque, mattified lipstick. You can wear it on it’s own with your coziest sweater or glam it up with a cat eye for some serious Cleopatra vibes.
If you aren’t comfortable going full on gold all over the lips, apply a swipe of gold gloss over another lipstick for a touch of something unexpected.
Orange
Orange is one of my most loved lip colors. A departure from the tried and true red, punchy citrus hues will surely get you noticed and tends to be flattering on all skin tones.
With orange lips, I go easy on the eyes and take a minimal route with well-groomed brows, a little liner, some mascara, and glowy skin. The bold color makes a statement on its own. But I also love going full on bronze goddess as well–making sure to apply a ton of bronzer, gold-toned highlight, and coppery tones on the eyes.
Chocolate
When I think of holiday lip looks, I think red and nude. Everyone loves a good red and everyone loves a good nude shade. If you want to make a subtle statement, try a chocolate hue on the lips. This ’90s trend is one that made a major comeback around 2016 and is still going strong. And let me tell you, I am here for it. Cinnamon shades, cocoa hues, and rich dark chocolates sound like holiday beverage flavors but are also lip colors on the nice list.
Crystal Clear…
If you don’t like lip color and prefer a more natural look, you can still turn heads by adding some holiday cheer by way of a crystal clear lip gloss.
A simple, super shiny clear gloss would look amazing paired with a simple liner and dewy skin drenched in highlight. Or might I suggest a bold eye?
…And Ultra Sparkly
And if you love the look of a simple gloss but maybe want something a little more interesting than clear, try a gloss jam packed with glitter.
Bombshell Pink
Pink is a great alternative that’s perfect for something daring that’s not red. I prefer the darkier, rosier pinks. But a bright ass fuchsia has never hurt anyone.
Gothic Plum
We all have makeup we wear when we want to feel a certain way. I wear a light berry pink when I want to feel flirty and feminine, a juicy and glossy nude when I’m feeling kind of hot, and a vampy plum when I want to feel a bit like a badass. You know, when you want to embody that totally cool girl who’s stand-offish but also mysterious and intriguing. Yeah. When I want to be that, that’s when I wear the plums.
It’s edgier than pink and just as bold, if not bolder than red. It’s uniquely unexpected, especially around Christmastime.
