There’s something about spring that makes you want to renew and freshen up all areas of your life…or maybe that’s just me. But nonetheless, most people tend to shift their wardrobe from winter to spring pieces. If you want to revamp your wardrobe for spring, you may think you need to spend a lot of cash in order to do so, but today we’re talking about what the industry refers to as “shopping your closet.” Chances are you have ample amounts of pieces to carry you over from winter to spring.
If you want to get your spring wardrobe ready without a major shopping spree, keep reading for my tips on how to shop your closet.
Window Shop
A great way to begin curating any sort of wardrobe is to do your research. Window shop in person, online, on Pinterest. See what’s trending on the runways for the season, and pick out the trends that you like and would wear. Keep in mind what you already own. You may be able to recreate the looks, or put together something with the same vibe.
Develop a Color Palette
I personally like to develop some sort of color palette. I’m a visual person, this makes sense to me. For example, for spring I’m really leaning toward colors like lavender, rose pink, and baby blue with neutrals like ivory, white, and navy. When shopping or trying to put looks together, I use this a bit of a guide.
Organize
The last thing you want to do when trying to reuse pieces you already own is to be overwhelmed by the state of your closet. Quickly toss out anything damaged or stained, and donate anything that doesn’t fit. After that, remove any pieces you know you aren’t going to wear in the future.
Beyond that, organization is up to you. I choose to organize my closet first by color then by type of clothing. You could also organize your clothing by type: shirts, dresses, skirts, blazers, etc… I would recommend refraining from organizing by season. That way you aren’t in the mindset to limit your pieces to one season and will be more likely to wear them year round.
Regardless of how you organize your clothing, having a tidy closet that doesn’t consist of unnecessary items will make shopping your own clothes a lot simpler.
Grab a Stylish Friend
Make it a friend event, and invite a fashionable friend to help you shop. It’s nice to have a second set of eyes. And chances are they’ll have a different perspective and create combinations you may have never thought of. Pour a glass of champagne. Put on some music. And make it a fun thing.
Find a Tailor
If you don’t already have a tailor, you should. Nothing is better than having clothing that fits well. But when shopping your own closet, re-imagine items that get little wear. What would that dress you love but don’t wear look like as a top? Maybe you have a pair of straight leg trousers you like, but would LOVE if they were a little more tapered. You can take all sorts of pieces and alter them to fit more closely to the trends.
Make a List of What You’re Missing
I know we’re shopping our closets to save money, but sometimes that consists of realizing what you’re missing. After you’ve come up with a few trends you want to incorporate and have de-cluttered a little, you may find yourself missing a couple of pieces. Make a list of what you’re missing, and do some shopping. I like to hit up thrift stores first, because if I can save a bit of cash, I’m in. After that, I’ll go to a mainstream store. Hopefully your list won’t be too extensive, and your shopping trip won’t be too overwhelming.
No matter your budget, there are tons of ways to stretch your winter wardrobe to spring. Re-imagine pieces. Create new combinations. And know what you’re looking for. Easy peasy. What are you tips for finding new looks from your own closet?
