The Chriselle Factor
Kind of like glitter makeup, most people see sequins as a night-only detail. You think Las Vegas or New Year’s. And for good reason. It’s a bit fancy, makes a statement, and street lights bounce off the sequined surfaces. But think: Sunlight can dance off the beads instead of bar lights, and you can add a bit of glamour to your daily routine.
Of course, there are no rules when it comes to fashion, but I do have a few easy tricks to make incorporating sequins into you daytime looks easy.
Casual Juxtaposition: I love juxtaposition, in writing, in my home, and in my clothing. Okay…I even like saying the word. The most chic way to wear sequins during the day, in my opinion anyway, is to style it with a lot of other casual pieces. Try wearing a sequined blazer with a pair of flared denim jeans, bonus points if they’re frayed at the end. Pair a sequined skirt with a long sleeve, denim button down that’s a little on the looser side. Or try rocking sequined pumps with knit joggers, a T-shirt, and a denim jacket. You don’t have to wear denim only with sequins, as those examples suggest.
Start small. If you’re a little apprehensive about how well sequins will go over throughout your day, start with something small and subtle like a bag or shoes. It’ll be like a test run, and if you dig it, work yourself up to the blazer and the skirt. Any outfit can use a little sprucing up, and this is a great way to do it.
Have a focus. A while back I talked about how I like to wear animal print, generally one at a time. I feel the same way about sequins. Unless I’m trying to make a bold statement, I like to stick to one, maybe two if they’re small, pieces with the sparkly detail and play around with other texture, color, or pattern in the rest of my outfit.
