Surprisingly to me, I’ve never tried anything from Huda Beauty. I remember last fall, the brand came out with a neon trio of palettes in this small format, and I was intrigued by them but never purchased them. But when I saw the Haze Obsession collection come out, my interest was definitely piqued. I ended up getting two of them: the Khaki Haze and Sand Haze palettes. This post will be a Huda Beauty Khaki Haze palette review*, and you can find a Sand Haze review here.
the basics –
Like I said, I’m not familiar with Huda Beauty and its formulas and performances. But I was immediately drawn to these Haze Obsession palettes. The concept for this collection was creating that soft-glam, veiled type of smokey eye. And I actually love that. I’ve been trying to get comfortable with, not only doing but wearing, makeup that is a little more blurred and soft and not as defined and harsh all of the time.
The Huda Beauty Khaki Haze palette is considered a mini 9-pan palette, retailing* at $29. I love the description of this one from the SEPHORA site. It reads: “It’s a seductive edit of olive- and caramel-hued mattes, warm-brown shimmers, and a decadent gold-pink duo-chrome topper.” This is the palette that spoke to me first and immediately. I think the price on these little palettes are great, and I really enjoy the compact size.
I also enjoy the packaging. The unit itself is a hard plastic. But not only does the color represent the color story inside, it has that hazy vibe on the outside of the packaging as well. It’s really clever and effective. There is also a high quality mirror on the inside, which I can appreciate as well.
the formula + shade selection –
I was immediately drawn to this color story. I’ve been favoring one shadow looks, usually with unique mattes and quality shimmers, and this served that right up in one little palette.
This color story is a combination of neutral and that grungey olivey/brown/bronze color I love right now. You get a couple of caramel browns, a soft pink, a khaki olive, a deep brown, a few variations of gold, and a really cool duo-chrome pink/purple topper. I think the color story is dimensional and create a lot of different looks. The matte pink can really soften some of those deeper brown, and the purple topper shade is a little unexpected but complements the rest of the shades well.
In terms of formulas, you get 3 in this palette: mattes, metallics, shimmers, and a topper. I’ve heard mixed reviews about the quality of the Huda shadows. But I can really only go off of this collection. The mattes are buttery and easy to blend and work with. I enjoy working with them. There are two definite metallics – the bottom middle, orange-based gold, and the middle right khaki/olive bronze. And I really enjoy those applied with either a finger or brush, wet or dry. The shade in the top right is a definite topper. There’s not a lot of pigment but a ton of duo-chromatic glitter. The shade in the top left is kind of an in between, not quite a topper, not quite metallic. In my opinion, it’s just a solid, cool gold shimmer.
the review –
The claim that this line of palettes will create a soft smokey eye holds true for me. The Huda Beauty Khaki Haze palette has more dimension than the Sand Haze, in my opinion. But the overall effect is going to be a little softer and less intense than other palettes that have deeper shades. I really enjoy the color story, and I don’t think it’s cluttered with unnecessary shades.
As for the formula, I wouldn’t go as far to say that it’s a favorite, but I’m not disappointed in the Huda formula. Some of the shades wear better than others. If you don’t like fallout, you might not enjoy this palette. I noticed a lot of fallout with the top row shimmers, but honestly I don’t mind that. You can do your eyes first or place a cotton pad under your eye when applying.
The other thing I really noticed was the wear time isn’t top notch. It was decent, but I did notice that some of the metallics muddled together and creased throughout the day more than other formulas. Personally, I don’t mind a grungey, creased look. But if you do, you might not like this one.
the bottom line –
The bottom line for me is: it’s nice. I don’t regret the purchase, but it’s not one I’d rush out to buy again if I lost it.
While the Huda Beauty Khaki Haze palette* isn’t my #1 favorite palette, I’ve been able to get some really beautiful looks from it. And I do find myself reaching for it on a pretty regular basis. If you’re into olives and bronzes and everyday to soft-glam looks, you may really be into this one. And the price point is great. Click here for a review and swatches of the Sand Haze palette.
