Jewelry is always something I’ve been attracted to. When I was a little girl, I loved going through my grandmother’s jewelry boxes and seeing all of the stones and metal. It was like opening a treasure chest, and the shine attracted me like a crow. Even though I’ve always loved jewelry, it’s not something I’ve ever enjoyed buying. When I go into shops or need a retail pick me up, the last thing I think about it jewelry.
This year has been a bit revolutionary for me. I feel like I’m coming into my own–my opinions are mine, my style is mine, and my beauty preferences have changed drastically. Something that has gotten drastically different is my choice is jewelry and accessories.
Rewind a little bit, and you’ll see me donning all of the statement jewelry. I used to love a good statement necklace. The bigger and flashier, the better. And I never really cared about the price or quality. Honestly, the less expensive, the better. I mean, I was a college student and ballin’ on a budget. But in 2018, I realized a few things. The first thing was I don’t like bulky jewelry. I love the look of it, and I’ve still held onto a couple of statement necklaces, rings, and earrings. But for the most part, I’m not a huge fan of it on myself.
The second thing I realized is that I want my daughters, and their daughters, to be mesmerized by my jewelry collection. I know it sounds so silly, but I want to peek in and see them trying on a necklace and dreaming of being sophisticated and “adult.” So I shifted my approach on jewelry pieces and how I will select them in the future.
Like I said, I still love a good statement, mainly in earring form. But on a day to day basic, I’ve been opting into the minimalist jewelry trend. Today I wanted to show you a few pieces in my current collection I wear constantly, as well as a few pieces I’m majorly lusting after.
Rings
I’m a big fan of the statement solitaire ring from time to time, but for the most part I’m a dainty ring gal. This is an area I’m hoping to expand in the near future; I think rings can make the “look,” you know? The two I wear most common are a small, rose gold ring with a rose gold druzy stone and a small gold band with an oblong amethyst stone. The druzy stone ring was a gift from Fitz (and I believe from Etsy), and the amethyst ring was a birthstone ring I had when I was a little girl. Truthfully, I’m not sure who got it for me (probably my mom or grandmother). It’s small on my fingers now, but I wear it on my pinkie when I want a little pop of color.
Bracelets + Necklaces
As I said, I used to be very into the statement necklace trend. It had its moment, but I’m definitely shying away from it as of late. Since I tend to opt for statement earrings, necklaces tend to get omitted. The predominant necklace I find myself wearing is this little “J” initial on a silver chain. This was also a gift from Fitz, for our first Valentine’s Day. Awwweee. I like how dainty it is, and it never overshadows anything else–like my outfit or makeup.
Bracelets are probably my least favorite type of jewelry. I’ve never been particularly into them. Partially it’s because my wrists are so small; everything fall off or moves all over my arm! But I do have one bracelet I wear frequently. It’s a small, roes gold bracelet with a purplish, raw stone. I like that it has the pulls to tighten and loosen the chain, which means it always is the perfect size!
Earrings
Earrings are my absolute favorite. I always thought women in movies looked so chic when they put their drop earrings in–there were so many beautiful colors and stones. And I try to emulate those women as often as I can, but when I’m going casual, I keep it basic. My go-to earrings are a simple pair of diamond studs (can you guess who they were a gift from?). They’re a bit square, but not harsh. Not too big and flashy, but noticeable in a subtle, elegant kind of way.
I’m also a fan of hooped earrings. I have an inexpensive pair of gold hoops from Loft that I wear quite often. I also have a pair of gold, oval shaped earrings I got at a thrift store. They’re beautiful, and the shape was so different, I couldn’t leave without them.
The Lust List
As I mentioned, jewelry isn’t something I buy often. I always see things I think are beautiful and would love, but I never am inclined to make the purchase or seek them out at a store. But when I do buy jewelry, it’s usually the most inexpensive version I can find. While there isn’t anything wrong with costume jewelry (and there’s definitely nothing wrong with a deal!), I would like to start building a collection of fine jewelry as well as some basics I can layer with outfits and other wild pieces.
I know not everyone believes in it, but I’m very big into astrology. And I really want a nice coin necklace with my zodiac constellation, like the one above. They’re just classic and cute. And I’m a proud Gemini! I also love this crescent moon necklace I saw on Etsy!
I also want to add a few different stacking rings and layering necklaces. Just basic gold and silver bands and chains. Nothing extravagant.
When it comes to studded earrings, there’s something about green topaz or emerald that draws me in every single time. The pop of green is beautiful to me.
How cute is that itty bitty mood ring!? That might have to get ordered ASAP.
