Something came over me in December, and I decided I wanted to try out the Sephora Play beauty subscription. And today we’re going to be reviewing the Sephora Play box for January 2020.
The Basics
Sephora’s Play box will cost you $10 and consists of 6 sample sized items. Each box comes with top products from buzzed about brands. The cool thing is they curate these boxes based on your profile, so you get makeup, skincare, and hair care that is relevant to you.
Some other fun facts:
- The bags your products come in are both sealable and leak-resistent but also recylable.
- Each month, you get exclusive access to videos, tutorials, and hacks for your new products.
The Goods
[ m a k e u p ]
Lancome Cils Booster XL Super-Enhancing Mascara Base: I don’t use them often, but I kind of like mascara priming products. I can’t tell if they’re a gimmick or not. This one from Lancome comes with amazing reviews and is supposed to be nurturing and enhancing for your lashes. With vitamin E to condition and micro-fibers to add length and thickness, this mascara base supposedly improves the performance of your favorite mascaras.
Full size $26.50 ; Box Value $9
Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper: I’ve used this in the past, and it’s a really nice liquid liner. I no longer purchase Kat Von D products, but I will probably use this since I have it unless I give it away.
Full size $20 ; Box Value $7
Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer: If you’re looking for a no nonsense primer, she’s your girl. It’s one of those dimethicone primers that blur and smooth pores and make your skin feel soft and smooth for makeup to glide easily over. It’s not my favorite primer ever, but it’s a solid option.
Full size $36 ; Box value $8

Glamglow Supermud Activated Charcoal Treatment Mask: Another product I’ve used previously and always like having one of these mini sizes on hand. It’s a purifying mask that can be used all over or as a spot treatment to target blemishes and visible pores. Leave it on until it hardens (where it will show you every blemish and pore and make you squirm). You’ll feel it tingle. Then rinse it away.
Full size $25/.5 oz.
It Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Brightening Eye Cream: I love their description of this eye cream: “Fake a full night’s sleep with this brightening under eye cream.” Your girl needs that! Collagen and cucumber extract soothe and depuff with this lightweight moisture cream.
Full size $48 ; Box value $16

Philosophy Amazing Grace Eau de Toilette: A bonus item in this box is Philosophy’s best selling fragrance. I’ll just list the notes here, because ya’ll don’t want me to try to explain it:
- Fragrance family: floral
- Top note: lily of the valley
- Base note: musk
Full size $50 ; Box value $1.25

Honestly, I’m pretty impressed with the Sephora Play January 2020 box. Lancome is a legacy brand. The Smashbox primer is a cult classic. I’m interested in trying to eye cream. Total box value: $66.25
