Quite frankly, I’ve been over the matte lip trend for a while. In 2017, the matte lip trend was huge. It was everywhere, and I loved it. Then. But I got a point where my lips just wanted moisture. They wanted a more hydrating and creamy formula, instead of the drying and tight feel matte liquid lips give you. So I moved on to my tried and true bullet lipsticks in 2018.
I’ve never been a huge gloss girl. To me, glosses were thick and sticky, goopy and messy. I also felt like my hair was always dragging gloss across my face. But toward the beginning of the year, my preference changed a bit. I remember putting on a brownish nude that was a bit off, so I thought adding a gloss would help matters. In hopes of fixing it, I grabbed an old nude gloss from NYC (which I love by the way) I had in my lipstick drawer, and I was pleasantly surprised.
Since then, I’ve started purchasing lip glosses and testing out various formulas. And while I’d still consider myself a lip gloss newbie, who has by no means tried all there is to try, I have found a handful of lip gloss formulas I think are really great. Let me tell you, they’ve come a long way!
Bite Beauty French Press Lip Gloss |
I recently picked this gloss up in the recent Sephora Sale in the shade ‘Dirty Chai,’ and I think I’m going to be using it all fall long. The French Press glosses were inspired by … can you guess … coffee! One of my favorite things. Not only do the shades resemble creamy caffeinated hues, the formula took a hint as well.
Antioxidant rich ingredients like coffee, coffee butter extract, and Arabica cold press coffee oil work together to promote hydration and a creamy shine. Simply put, these are freaking comfortable! The pigmentation is that of most glosses–pretty transparent, but still offers a light wash of color. And the formula feel comfortable and hydrating on the lips for hours.
These coffee inspired glosses are part of a limited edition collection, so I’d get my hands on them while they’re still in stock!
Marc Jacobs Enamored Hydrating Lip Gloss Stick |
Before we go forward, the common link here is that all of these are immensely comfortable, hydrating, and non-offensively shiny. But I will continue to say that in each of these descriptions.
I’ve tried the original Enamored glosses from Marc Jacobs before, and I really liked them. So I was intrigued when I saw them in stick form. I didn’t exactly know what to expect; I thought they may be more like a tinted balm situation. Boy was I wrong. These are literally the glosses in a stick.
It glides on super easy and leaves the most beautiful and intense shine on your lips. Upon application, my lips immediately feel moisturized, and it wears comfortably throughout the day. What I love most about these is that I don’t have to fuss or use a mirror to apply it. I generally just pop it on in the center of my lips over a liner, and I’m good to go.

Wet n Wild Color Icon Lip Gloss |
Formulated with vitamin E and murumuru seed butter, these glosses have excellent moisturizing and nourishing properties to keep lips soft and improve lip texture. What makes this formula a little different than the previous two is that it’s a bit more pigmented. I don’t always need to wear a liner or lipstick underneath to really make it pop–they do that on their own. And the shine they offer is almost wet looking. It glistens in the lights in such a pretty way.
I also went into depth about the Color Icon Gloss from The Flights of Fancy Collection. found here.
Coloupop Ultra Glossy Lip |
The first lip product I tried from Colourpop was one of the matte finish Lippie Stix. I was obsessed with those! I think it’s funny that my new favorite lip product from the brand is the polar opposite, the Glossy Lips. It smooths and conditions the lips with a cushion like feel and no stickiness!
And in true Colourpop fashion, there are like a million shades. So you are guaranteed to find one you like.
