For the past year or so, I’ve been having some pretty serious hair issues. Between hair loss and small patches of psoriasis on my scalp, it’s been an interesting ride. So I jumped on the custom shampoo train and tried Function of Beauty.
I don’t know why we want everything as personalized as possible, but FoB really sounded like something I may enjoy. Co-founded by two engineer grads and a cosmetic chemists, Function of Beauty’s mission is allowing you have ownership over your products. They even put your name on the bottle!
Keep reading for my experience with the company, customer service, and product.
How Does It Work?
The process was really easy and pretty self-explanatory. You begin by taking the hair quiz and setting up your hair profile. It’ll take you through a series of questions defining you hair type, hair structure, and scalp moisture. You then select your hair goals from a list of things like volume, color protection, repair, deep condition, etc. Then you choose the formula color and scent. They also claim these products are paraben, sulfate, and toxin free as well as cruelty free.
My hair profile:
- Hair Type: straight
- Hair Structure: fine
- Scalp Moisture: dry
- Hair Goals: replenish hair, volume, strengthen, nourish roots, soothe scalp
- Color: dye-free (I was afraid with the hair loss situation I’m going through to get any dyes, but I think I’d be open to it next time)
- Scent: Musk-Have (sandalwood and violet)
How’d It Perform?
I’m not going to lie, the first time I washed my hair with this and dried it, I hated it. I thought my hair looked oily and felt heavy. My hair absorbs moisture like it has nothing better to do, so anything that’s too moisturizing on my roots tends to be disastrous. I thought I was having that issue with this product. However, as the day went on, my hair felt really soft and began to feel lighter. It felt really good. It also began to look for voluminous the more I used it.
I’ve been using this for about a month now, and I haven’t had that initial issue of being really heavy again. It may have just been my hair getting used to new ingredients.
What’s the Packaging Like?
The packaging upon arrival is really cute. It comes in a pretty box with your name on it, and everything is laid out very nicely. The bottles themselves are clear plastic topped with metal twist on lids. There are pumps included in your package as well. The overall packaging is really understated and minimal, which I think a lot of people would appreciate. It looks nice in your shower.
Their Customer Service Did What!?
When I got my first package, the conditioner bottle had cracked, and a lot of product leaked out. It was easy to just wipe off of the shampoo bottle and pumps, but I was bummed that some of the product was wasted. I emailed customer service, and not only did they send a replacement, they also credited me $10 for the problem. I thought that was especially nice, and honestly will probably tempt me to continue using their products. In my opinion, good customer service goes a long way.
They also have a happiness guarantee and will refund your purchase within 30 days or will reformulate until you’re satisfied.
What’s the Bottom Line?
It’s hard for me to speak to everyone, because when I used this product, it was specifically formulated for me and my needs. However, I would recommend this. I’ve never been one to have an absolute favorite shampoo/conditioner combo, but I do enjoy this one. Going forward, I would tweak a few things in my formula. I would try another color, and I would try another scent.
If you feel you’re jumping from shampoo to shampoo because you’re missing something in the formula, this may be something you’d really enjoy.

Oh I am so glad! I also struggle with scalp psoriasis. I hope you love it!
Another thing you might try is the Dermarest Psoriasis medicated shampoo. I used that for a while, and I really liked it as a co-wash. And it cleared up a lot of the psoriasis patches on my neck.
